RE: shift ball thingie
I got one a few weeks ago for $10.00.
It takes a 13mm wrench to undo the bolt securing it to the main selector
shaft and a 10mm socket to undo the top plate. I lubricated the ball with
white lithium grease before assembly.
Adjustment of the shifter is done by the clamp on the front end of the main
selector shaft. Chock the car, place it in neutral. Loosen the bolt that
clamps the end of the shaft and set the distance from the slider (under the
shifter) to the plastic slide wall to 15mm. (about the thichness of a
cassette tape case).
Easy job. (thanks for the data from another list member!)

Subject: shift ball thingie
OK, so my roommate moved my Scirocco so he could jumpstart his Civic
(ugh...) and Fritz wasn't too thrilled about it. As luck would have it,
he heard a loud "pop" and the shifter fell through the floor. Thinking
it was that little c-clip, I went to pop it back in, only to find that it
was good. Could it be a dead shift ball thingie? If so, where can i get
one and for how much?
Thanks,
B.
P.S.- my roomie told me if I was going to blame him for it, I ought to
embelish it a bit by saying he just wanted to drive my superior car. I
told him that it would be assumed... :-)
