Here's what I've found helpful when pulling out the tranny.
I support the engine from below (I know the beltley says from above, but I 
don't have a hoist) I use a bottle jack, and a 2x4 with a recessed hole for 
the bottle jack. I use this to slowly tilt down the motor/tranny to give 
clearance from the body.

I also tilt rotate the tranny so that the driveshafts/diff are raised and 
more out of the way.

Then I just grunt and pull it out. I keep a floor jack under the tranny to 
support it. I've done 3 tranny jobs that way, by myself.
