Jason, sorry for your loss.  Sounds kinda like my accident, but I was
the car in the middle.  The insurance company will work with an
appraising agency who does research on how much 84 GTIs are selling for
in the area.  If you have aftermarket mods done to the car, gather all
receipts and be ready to present them.  They won't give you much extra
for mods, but they are worth something.  The at-fault insurance company
will also pay for a rental car for you.  Even better, if you have other
transportation means and don't take the rental offer, they will pay you
$15 a day from the day the accident occured to the day the claim is
settled.  They call it loss of use reimbursement.  Keep in mind this $15
a day is saving them money compared to paying for a rental for you, so
try to get them to come up a little.  Allstate wouldn't budge much, but
I got them to $17.  Not much, but hey, $2 a day adds up.  :-)  

Make your insurance company work for you too.  Call them up and report
the accident if you haven't already.  Let both insurance companies do an
appraisal on your GTI and take the highest offer.  If you take your
insurance company's offer, they will go after the at-fault insurers
anyway.
