Re: muffler for Toby's 16v
Turbos make great mufflers. (Seriously!) The best sounding exhaust I ever
had was when the turbo was on my car. Smooth, quiet, powerful and you could
actually hear the ENGINE in addition to your own thoughts.
Assuming you don't want or can't afford a turbo, retaining your catalytic
converter helps. I've run a few different combinations of UltraFlo and
SuperTurbo and found the worst combination for NOISE to be a non-cat system
(header or racing DP) with the UltraFlo. When using the stock downpipe &
cat, the UltraFlo is not QUIET but it is tolerable even under full load and
high RPM. Likewise, the tri-Y header and the SuperTurbo muffler was fairly
mellow, not very noisy but with some "spatter" or "raspberries" or whatever
you call it at high RPM.
Right now I'm running a factory downpipe with a 2.5" cat welded onto it.
This goes into a 2.5" system all the way back to an UltraFlo. The sound is
pretty nice. Deep mellow tone under most conditions except full throttle,
high RPM and even then there isn't excessive amount of that ricey spattering
sound.
If I were you, Toby, I'd go to Walts and have a SuperTurbo muffler welded
up. It's a $50 muffler and they shouldn't charge too much for installation.
If you can get out of there for under $100 then it would probably be worth
it to save yourself some grief trying to do it yourself. I do have a spare
TT center pipe that's a little beat up but still serviceable. I need to
send the UltraFlo back for exchange, tho, 'cause it developed a rattle.
