I rebuild engines and my policy is that the oil gets changed at 250miles and 
500 and at 1000. All of those miles must be under 3k rpms. On performance 
engines I ask that the customer change their oil at 1500 as well (still 
under 3k rpms). Do not switch to synthetic until you have reached the 5k 
mark. Just my thoughts and input. I know I may be overly anal about it but 
the worst thing is a short lived rebuild.HTH
