this is what vw recommends (or did in '86). from the owners manual:
"The internal friction on a new engine is high. It will diminish
gradually as all moving parts adjust to each other. You can contribute
to extending the service life and economy of your engine and observing
the following pre-cautions.
- Full throttle should be avoided.
- The maximum permissible engine speed is 4200 rpm.
Manual Transmission
Gear up to 600 miles / 1000 km
1 20mph 30kmh
2 30mph 55kmh
3 50mph 80kmh
4 65mph 105kmh
5 75mph 125kmh
- From 600 miles / 100 km to 900 miles / 1500 km the speed can be
gradually increased.
