Yep. Large amounts of carbon deposits will raise the compression ratio to
the point that retarding the timing won't help. If you regularly redline
your car and don't lug around under heavy throttle, this won't be the problem.
The other thing that causes detonation is excessive heat. If the car only
pings when warmed up, you may have a blockage in some of the coolant
passages, causing one (or more) of the cylinders to overheat.
