[non-roc]jetta question

hey list, i have a friend with an 86' jetta...it has new master cylinder, new drums, new pads, and the lines are bled...but whenever the brake is depressed the car makes a clunking kind of noise...you also have to brake kinda early cuz they don't work too well...any ideas on this one?

also transmission is grinding between 1st and 2nd...will a little redline fix this?
