RE: Fuba question
I just did this within the last year on my 16V. If that is the original
Fuba in there, it's going to be a one piece. The difference in time to
change the Fuba will be pretty significant. Here are the steps.
1. Remove rubber seal around hatch to expose the end of the headliner.
2. *Gently* pull down on headliner to pull it away from the roof of the car.
It's only glued for the first 1-2 inches and you only need to be able to get
your hands underneath it, so don't go hog wild.
3. Look underneath the headliner and you'll see a wire attached to the
headliner that is clipped into the roof in about 4 places. Release the wire
attached to the headliner from the roof (you'll see how to do it).
4. The base of the Fuba should now be exposed.
5. If it is a two piece Fuba (keep your fingers crossed), disconnect the
wire, unbolt and remove the old Fuba, clean the mounting area, reinstall the
new Fuba, and reconnect the wire.
6. If it is a one piece Fuba (you poor bastard), the wire is going to run
down the passenger C-pillar, through the passenger rear quarter panel, under
the rear seat to the center of the floor, under the carpet down the center
of the floor, around the parking brake, under the shifter area, behind the
center console and into the back of the stereo. You have to get to the back
of the stereo, disconnect the antenna and power wire and then pull the wire
back through the path. I attempted to connect the old wire to the new wire
so I was threading the new wire as I removed the old one. It only kind of
worked. After removing the old wire, run the new wire (Potterman will be
sending you a two piece) through the path. Connect it to the freshly
installed Fuba and be glad that you don't have to do this ever again since
the two piece is now installed.
7. Reinstall the headliner.
8. Reinstall the rubber seal around the hatch.

Subject: Fuba question
Woo-hoo! Just visited my car at the paint shop. The $300 bribe to the shop
foreman is paying off handsomely (also reduced total cost by $600, so the $
was well spent) - the car is already stripped down, the minor body work that
it needed is done, and it's ready for the next stage of prep. Now looking
at total of 3-4 weeks max to get it back.. sweet!
Question - I have a new Fuba coming in my buttload of parts via Potter. The
shop wants to know how to get the current one off. Mike says that he's not
sure whether the cable is a 2-piece job - i.e. just drop the headliner at
the back, disconnect and pull the top end out - or if it's one piece, which
would make it considerably more of a clusterfuck. Who has wrestled with
this
on an '86.5 16V and can comment??
Also - how long do you guys recommend I let the paint cure before waxing??
Of course I'll get the shop's guidance on this one too but welcome any and
all opinions from the peanut gallery.. :D
To those of you who have already committed to buying certain parts - I will
retrieve the stuff hopefully at the beginning of next week, then will
ship as soon as I see your checks. I'm outta town starting Wednesday
so there's a chance that I won't be able to scoop the stuff till I get
back, but I'm gonna try.
