Shift linkage help

I have run into a problem after finishing installation of a *new* tranny
and clutch (on my 86 16v) ...here are the puzzling facts...

-I adjusted the shift linkage so that I can easily select every gear with
or without the clutch pedal depressed (when the engine is off, of
course!). Now I started the engine and tried to select a
gear...nothing...I could not put the tranny into any gear with the engine
running!  I shut off the engine and was once again able to shift into any
gear.  !?!?!?  What is going on here?!?
-Next, I tried to start the car in first gear...no problem...only that I
now couldn't get it out of first gear...I had to shut off the engine and
was then able to shift out of gear.

Ok...I know that the clutch was properly intalled and is functioning
properly.  I can only think that the shift linkage must be out of
alignment or something.  This is just very odd since I can shift through
all gears while the engine is off, just not while it's running.  Has
anyone ever had this experience before?  I just don't know what could be
wrong...
Any thoughts?  TIA
