Anyone for a strange problem?

Hi all,

My 82 (1.7) has been exhibiting a strange knocking/clunking type sound
recently (actually it's been doing this intermittantly for  a while, but
has recently increased).  It seems to happen usually under light to
moderate acceleration and in the range of 2000-3000 rpm (roughly).  If I
back off the throttle, it stops.  It wasn't doing this today, but it did
seem to be running roughly (especially at idle).
Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.
