GTI tranny???

my friend is gonna be purchasing an '87 gti 16v, it appears that the cv cup 
seals are leaking, that can be fixed.  The really bad part, is that when the 
cluch is ingaged, shards of metal come out of the timing hole!  and when you 
let the clutch out, you hear grinding.  i think it could be the clutch, but 
to take no chances, anyone got a spare 5 spd tranny?  Got a price on that, 
it doesn't have to be 16v, just a 5 speed, and cheep!  would help if it had 
a decient clutch with it.  TIA
