the best method i've found that works is to fill up the expansion tank. 
then pour coolant into the radiator.  then pur more coolant into the
engine block on the water outlet side.  the hardest part is getting that
stupid thermostat to open up the first time.  i've heard of drilling a
little hole on the rim of the thermostat to let bubbles out.  i haven't
done that, but filling up the radiator and the block usually works. 
after it opens, let it run for a few minutes, shut it down and top it
off.  it will go down a little during the week as more bubble work their
way out.
