-----I agree wholeheartedly with this.  It would be far more worth your while 
to spend the $300 - $500 for a complete 1.8l Gti motor than to spend the time 
and hasle trying to implement 1.8l parts into your 1.7l motor......  unless 
it is the H block.  Then (I have been informed) there is a nice little secret 
parts combination from VW various motors (and subsequent machining) for some 
serious performance potential.
