16V G60 question

    i noticed that in the pictures sent to the list regarding the 16V G60
(http://www.aurielle.com/scirocco/gin50mm.html), the alternator was above
the top of, and behind the engine, as opposed to in front of, and below the
top of the engine.

    why did the builder put the A/C on there?  wouldn't it be better to run
the alternator down in the place where the A/C compressor is?  i'm not
mocking the project in any way, of course.  it's an absolutely gorgeous
motor that must go like stink.  i'm just wondering if they were forced to
connect it all like that, or if they did so cuz they wanted A/C...
