Performance figures - 1.7 vs. 1.8

I'm debating hat to do about my engine situation.  My new '82 has the stock
1.7, but my '84 that I'm probably going to part out has the stock 1.8.  I
see the difference in power and torque according to Bentley, but I wonder
how much difference this actually makes in performance, and I don't have a
G-tech.  Can anyone speak from experience?  Is it worth the trouble of
swapping the motors and selling the 1.7, or should I hold out for something
else?  I'm not sure I want to go to a 16V ($$), but I like the thought of
more power.

What engines were in the 8V GTIs through the years?
