Even new release bearings rattle a little, they are really cheap and
while it's apart,
I'd swap in another pushrod, replace the release bearing, and cross my
fingers...

Something similar happened to an '89 GTI 2.0L 16V after I drove the car.

When you push the clutch in it makes a rotational groaning sound, right
at the end of the pedal.
I gave him a release bearing, because he didn't remember if he replaced
it...

He pulls the tranny and discovers several loose flywheel bolts, just
tightens them up and re-installs the trans.
When I told him that it was most likely flywheel/clutch related...

In his case, having the loose flywheel bolts could definitely warp the
flywheel, causing it to not catch evenly.

How loud is the machining noise?
