I know this thread is getting old, just thought I would add this:  Even 
though VW's are quirky (and yes, sometimes a pain to deal with).  My 84 costs 
me $0.11 to drive.  This include gas, insurance, and even the purchase 
price!!!  I have driven my car for 15k miles so far, and could not wish for 
anything better (but a better Scirocco or Corrado, in the winter a nice 4x4 
would do).  Anyway, if you don't like fixing cars, get a new car with a 
factory warranty. (and then add up the cost of driving so we can all laugh at 
you!)

BTW  I am about ready to drive my 84 on a 3 hour trip, loaded with a weeks 
worth of supply, a bike on the back, a 16' sailboat towing behind with 
battery and 2 heavy anchors, and the cost of gas at $2.05/gal.  Damn I'm glad 
I don't have an SUV!!!!
