I can confirm Gary's thoughts on the small block Chevy. Inbetween my VWs, I owned an '87 LX 5.0. While it never handled very well, it ran like a bat outa hell. The kicker was that it would get right at 30mpg on the highway cruising at 70 with the a/c and 24mpg day in, day out. The only mods were Flowmaster mufflers, K&N filter and advanced timing. This added up to about 240-250hp and was good for high 14s to low 15s in the qtr mile - depending on the driver
(errors).
