Help - tranny whine

I have an odd noise coming from the ACN tranny on an '87 8v
'rocco.

The car drives fine, shifts fine - but in 4th gear only,
under acceleraton, it whines - with a hint of a metallic
grind.

Can anybody shed some light on what this might be?
