Hot air, cold air...

I have been noticing a very irritating occurence in my
84 8v 'rocco the last few weeks.

It runs like a bat out of hell in the mornings and in
the evenings (50-60deg). Pulls like a champ up the
mountain to work.
 But during the days (90-95deg) it is really sluggish.


I figure it is due to the temperature of the air being
pulled in being hot due to both outside and engine
temp.

Is there any other cause?  Anything I should be taking
a look at?  It is a stock airbox w/K&N.  No engine
mods to speak of (yet).
