Alternator rebuilding

Has anyone ever rebuilt an alternator?  The alt. in my 16v sounds like the
bearings are going bad...and at high rpm's (around 6000 rpm) the alt will
cut out until the rpm's fall back down below 6k (I have a new voltage
regulator already...)

I know that there are two bearings in the alt that need to be replaced...
what else is done when the alt is "rebuilt"?

I just wanted to know how easy/hard this might be to do myself.

Any help is appreciated
