testing battery drain

Can someone tell me how to test for battery drain?  More specifically, I know 
I have something draining the battery, I want to know what circuit it's on.  
Do I need an amp meter or can this be done with a volt meter?  Essentially I 
need to know where to put the meter and what type of meter to use.
