In the classic sense, neither of these boxes are subject to the
SMS (self machining syndrome). There's an extensive write up on
SMS on scirocco.org under the FAQ section I believe. It details
the exact serial numbers, years and codes which are affected by SMS.
As defined by that transcribed article, SMS is due to the deletion
of a .10 cent circlip from the pinion shaft. Instead, an enlarged
rivet is supposed to retain the pinion shaft, but after some time
(how you've driven the car doesn't seem to matter much in this
regard) the shaft wears through the rivet. It then is allowed to
travel outward towards the case where it will eventually beat a hole
in the side of the case...somewhat higher in the bell housing area
as seen from the inside usually. Anyone, the full details are

Now, this is not to say that other VW transaxles don't fail in
spectacular ways, but it's not SMS as it's been defined. Not every
failure is SMS. :) Doesn't that make you feel better?
