A lil advice - haunt the aircooled newsgroup for a
while before coming to a decision.  Figure out exactly
what you want, then don't settle for less.

My suggestions 
Any convertible beetle
Karmann Ghia
1967(?) or earlier bus (A Splittie!)
or a squareback/notchback/fastback

You should be able to get at least $2500 for your
rocco, and you could get a good starting project of
any of these.  If you don't do your homework, you can
get screwed really easily on older VW's.  They'll try
and sell a fiberglass & putty 74 as an oval, or
somesuch... And all fanatics think their projects are
worth the $$$ invested, and not the actual value of
the vehicle.
