you must remove the lower radiator hose (which will empty the contents of the 
radiator), and the bracket that surrounds the thermostat housing.  Then the 
thermostat housing.  While yer at it...put in a low temp fan switch too 
(lower-drivers side of the radiator)  The low temp combo works pretty nice.
