No go Scirocco! Help!

My 88 16v suddenly doesn't want to run. She wants to walk. Car ran fine
today, then this evening it revs and drives, but accelerates slowly. If you
have it at idle, then rev it up, it'll rev up, kinda cough and sputter for
a sec, then drop down almost to the point of stalling. My air/fuel gauge is
going like it's on crack. I'm thinking clogged cat... spark plugs are fine,
wires are new, everything else checks out ok...
How can I tell if the cats clogged? I've been planning on replacing the cat
with the TT non-cat downpipe anyways, so this might be a blessing in
disguise. Thanks guys!
