OK, more info:

It appears that the bug manifests itself if you do the machine test and save
the results. I did a bit of surfin' and it appears this is NOT an unusual
occurrence. It seems to be happening to people who bought it before Xmas.
This may just be a coincidence. Also, the drag race track is not there. So,
if you haven't run the machine test track, DON'T!! Sony's warranty hotline
says this bug occurs because of using non-Sony licensed memory cards, which
sounds like total bullshit to this old bullshitter. Sony's being no help,
according to the bulletin board on Sony's Playstation site. So, buyer
beware, I guess... Too bad this happened, cause the game's friggin' awesome
otherwise.
