Not to discount your findings, but how are you calculating your mileage. 
Using the trip meter? Usually the trip meter works sporadically just 
before it stops working completely. So it would only read, say, 175 
miles when you actually travelled 300. This would throw your 
calculations way off. 

Also check that the O2 sensor wire is not shorted out to the manifold. 
Mine made contact with the exhaust manifold and melted off the 
insulation. Had pretty bad mileage there for a while. 

Other than that have it checked out by a mechanic with a sniffer. It will 
go a long way to get it running optimally.
