That retainer fell off on my mom's Cabriolet.  I just took a nylon snap-tie, 
pushed the bearing back in the shaft and pulled the tie tight.  
It has worked for 6 months now! no disasembly required.  
So I guess there is a cheap and easy VW fix for about everything...
