What do you mean by "found a piece ... on the intake manifold"? I think
you're talking about the upper injector insulator. They make them out of
brass or a hard plastic; did this break? It'd be bizarre to find "a piece"
of it broken off, so maybe I'm misreading this. They can be replaced and
are pretty cheap; need to remove the injector and use a 11mm or 12mm
(Bentley say 12 but my local parts guy says 11) allex key to remove it. If
I read this correctly and it's broken then I might worry about bits
falling the other way, into the engine...

And yes, this could be a source for poor performance, as you may be
leaking in a lot of air...
