I'm in Michigan, currently with lots of snow (god I wish it was summer!), and 
low temps to match that.  I don't have any of my radiator covered (81 Rocco) 
and it takes hardly any time to warm up.  It warms up to a nice roasty temp.  
I have a lower temp fan switch and thermostat.  I'm also running the orange 
coolant.  The switch and thermostat are not radically low, just the next step 
lower than stock.  Now my 87 16v on the other hand.  I only have the fan 
switch in there.  I've got the thermostat, but I've been a bit lazy getting 
to that.  And the car responds by taking forever to warm up.  I could 
circumvent all of this cold weather crap by moving to a warmer climate.  
Which is what I plan to do sometime....
