my 1600GT Rocco did this, there was air getting into the fuel lines so i
replaced them and the fuel pump and now it is sorted, the golf may not work the
same as it is injected and mine is a carb model.  If there is a see-through fuel
filter check if there are bubbles in the fuel as it passes through.
