The newer (late 80's and up) VW automatics should be pretty reliable, nothing 
to really worry about. I had a 1991 Jetta, whose automatic i screwed up while 
auto-xing for one season and basically just beating the crap out of (poor 
car). But with just casual driving, as long as you dont do what i did, they 
should be just fine....especially for $3-4K.
