engine swap

Hi,
I'm lining up some engines to replace the 1.7 gas in my 83 Audi 4000.
The one with a rod knock.
84 GTI engine 89K $350 junkyard
86 Golf engine 86 K $250 junkyard
87 GTI engine with tranny 120K $300 private sale. Says its an 8V, but
were there 87 GTI w/o 16V?
84 Rabbit engine with carb, I'd have to replace the intake. $200 Friend
I'd appreciate any input on ease of swap, power, gas mileage(I commute
150 miles/day) etc.
