I did
that exact swap several years ago with great results. The 86 GTi RD motor
is fun in the MkI, add a cam, headers, exhaust and fuel enrichment and you'll be
smoking every 16v you come across. :-)
The
wire harness is simple to install, only two wires have to come back through the
firewall.
The
motor is a bolt in, however, you have to swap the fuel injection in the MkI over
to the passenger side or bore out your intake manfold for the GTI throttle
body. If you don't use headers, then the stock dual outlet manifold from
your Roc combined with the Techtonics DP is fine. Remember too, that the
stock MkI exhaust is a total peeshooter......and should be upgraded to at least
2 inch for the high compression RD motor to breath.
The
GTI also has the 9A tranny which is close ratio but requires you to have 100MM
driveshafts, and those don't fit the MkI hubs. This problem is solved by
swapping the outer CV joints or grabbing a set of later model MkII
16v hubs.
The
GTi brakes are a bolt on as well, fronts are 9.4? vented rotors with bigger
calipers than your MkI probably has now, You can use the Gti rear caliper
setup by swapping the rear stub axel and calipers onto your MkI and upgrading
the MkI brake booster/master cylinder with a 16v Roc unit. Oh, also, you
have to switch sides with the rear calipers so that the parking brake cable
fits.
I
would recommend fitting the GTi overflow bottle and a later model radiator as
well.
Obviously there is more to it than this. E-mail me off list if you
want more info.
