NW Dyno Day recap
A big thanks to Shannon for putting together a great NW event, for starters.
I think we had at least a dozen cars out, split about 50/50 between
Sciroccos and Corrados. The snow that threatened to come down never
materialized, which left us with cold and dry conditions - perfect for dyno
runs :)
I put down 143.6hp and 120.8lb/ft, which is down from a previous run but I'm
satisfied nonetheless. I'm still having problems getting this european FI
to run properly when starting up in the 0-10 degree weather, so I had the
car tuned down a few hp to try to compensate. It doesn't seem to be
working... still undecided on whether or not to keep the euro FI or switch
to motronic.
For all of you comparing notes on 16v mods, my previous cams (schrick 276)
appear to have about 10 peak road horsepower over my current set
(combination of piper's 260 intake and 272 exhaust). This is partially
offset by the horsepower and torque curves, which favor the asymmetrical
setup. For some reason, however, the dyno couldn't obtain any data around
3-4000 rpm because the sensor they attached to the #1 plug wire
malfunctioned at those rpms on all 3 runs. It was hooked up properly, and
mine was the only car with this problem.... does anybody have any ideas?
I don't recall anyone else's numbers, but Shannon's car made something like
136hp? An excellent number for a car without a set of cams... There was a
green VR6 Corrado that made 162-ish hp, which is a lot for a NA VR6 car.
Another Corrado had a Lysholm supercharger on it, which made it sound
something like an old-school fire truck's siren. VERY COOL! Didn't stick
around for his run, though...
BTW, the owner of the 1.8t Scirocco was there, albeit without his car - it's
in the middle of intercooler, injector, transmission, and software upgrades
and barely missed being ready on time :( Instead, he brought his friend's
Viper GTS, which nonchalantly put 450hp and 400lb/ft of torque down at the
wheels. And then did some donuts in the parking lot at lunchtime. All in
all, it was a great day! Thanks again to Shannon for putting it together
for us....
