Id say to not use them.
Depending on how old the car is and how abused the car has been, you can
do more damage to seals by using a cleaner/flush treatment in the oil. Im
not saying you cant or couldn't get decent results. If its my car, im not
willing to run the risk of having to replace the front and rear main
seals when all I had to do was change the oil and filter. Most engine
oils have a detergent of some kind in them. Its not enough to clean out
the neglect that your friends car sounds like its suffering from.
Ive heard that ATF cleans stuff but to me it would seem that it could
cause more harm than good. Its NOT engine oil. Its very thin and it its
in there long enough to prevent oil to do its job in the main and rod
bearings then it very well could damage bearings. Its not a good trade
off in my book. Its not worth the risk to me. A simple oil change could
do more good than anything else as a treatment.
