Thanks to everyone who responded with the
answer of reconnecting the guage cluster.  Instant 14 volts! 
Learn something new everyday-I've never had alternator problems before so
never knew much about them.  Thanks guys and gals.  As for
having bought a rebuilt alt, the bearings were going in mine anyway- what
the hell.
