Re: erratic idling upon cold start
I'm fighting something like this on my '86 Jetta right now (except that it does it when hot too). One thing to check is the temperature switch that tells the computer that the engine is warm enough for it to start looking at the oxygen sensor. I think the location of the sensor has changed a bit over the years, but it should be on one of the coolant hose fittings at the head. It has two wires connecting to it. Check the switch with an ohm meter. It should be closed if the engine is cold (less than about 75-80 degrees F) and open if warmer.
Its not the cold start valve, since that only operates while the starter is cranking.
Its a good idea to check for vacuum leaks too.
