Help!--Stalling MK1
This is my first post to the list, but I've been happily lurking for a long
time. I enjoy reading everyone's posts during my lunch hour.
I know some of you because I've bought used stuff from you, and I now know
Shawn because he's a fellow San Diegan and he was cool enough to deliver a
few of his shirts to my house. He talked me into turning my current 2-liter
rebuild (UQ block--anyone have info on this motor?) into a screamer.
Now I'm posting this because I need some help.
Car: '81 S
Motor: JH
Ignition: stock
Yesterday evening I was coming home from work and the gas gauge was in the
red zone. No problem, I had run it that low before, so I knew I could make
it to a gas station closer to home...
As I took the offramp off of the freeway, my car suddenly died.
I started it up as I was coasting, it ran for a few seconds, and then it
died again.
Figured that I was out of gas, so I pulled into a parking lot and called the
wife to bring gas.
Dumped in the gallon of gas and started to head home. The whole way home it
would run fine and then die. Start it up again...run a little ways...dies
again.
Right before it would die, it would give a very slight little blip (surge)
and then just completely die. No sputtering, no nothing, just completely cut
power and die.
Please note that it has had a little trouble with hot starts and starting in
hot weather ever since I installed a worked intake manifold and Neuspeed TB
earlier this year. I replaced the cold-start valve gasket to improve this
problem, but no change. But it's no big deal because it runs fine after a
couple of minutes.
So I'm looking to the list for some advice to get me rolling.
I realize that my Bently will get me through it, but I hate
trouble-shooting. I love taking a wrench to my car, but I hate reading
through my Bently trying to figure out what the problem is. I'd almost
rather spend money swapping out old parts for new than be forced to
trouble-shoot this problem. Yes, I hate trouble-shooting that much.
Actually, this is one of those extremely rare times that I have had a
problem with a VW. My Scirocco is a real trooper! She gets me through
everything--Even daily driving in Tijuana!--without a whimper.
So what are my best bets for checking/swapping out first?
Please help...otherwise I'll be forced to continue driving my Integra!
(Ooops)
Thanks,
Theron
