knocking problem - mk1

driving down the road the other day and I heard a
REALLY loud knowck, well more of a clank from the
engine...loss of power, yada, yada. SO figured either
its a valve or a ROD. took off the oil pan today and
found nothing wrong down under...I think its valve,
anybody have any similiar experience? tearing the head
apart? ANy suggestions???
