mad gear whine...normal?

I actually drove my car a little today, and the transmission whines pretty 
loud.  I made sure there was plenty o' fluid in it (valvoline 80W-90), and 
it still did it.  Is this normal for a 16v?  It didn't sound bad, it 
actually sounds kinda cool.
