super shifting linkage problems

Hi all,
Got my 16v running well, only problem is something is wrong with my shift 
linkage and I can't figure it out.  It almost seems as if the smaller 
linkage rod (the one that connects to the tranny) is too long.  I have to 
push down to get into first and second.  Do I need to replace some bushings 
or something?  I just installed a 2Y out of an 86 gti into the car, maybe 
that has something to do with it.
