I think you're on track with the exhaust leak causing the O2 sensor to 
measure a lean mixture and enrichen it too much.  I'd run without the O2 
sensor until you fix the exhaust leak.  Also, you might want to lean out 
your mixture a little since it sounds like it's just too rich.  Don't lean 
it out too much, or you might do engine damage.
