2H trans installed...
So...
I've always had an FN in my cars, mostly. I had a 2H in an '83 roc
that I drove for a few months once, but other than that, I've always had
wide ratios in my A1's (I've had two A2 Jetta GLI's with close-ratios, but
not like the 2H). So I'm replacing my clutch because it's slipping (turns
out it was oil-soaked, not really completely worn out, so I of course
replaced the rear main seal, carrier seal, oil pan gasket, transmission
mainshaft seal, pushrod seal and bearing as well), and I notice that the
output shafts on my FN clunk a lot. And it leaks a LOT. I have to throw
about a pint in every month or two. Bad. So I figure I'll just replace it
with one of the 2H's that I have upstairs, since it's soon to become not a
daily driver (I'm buying a 5KCSTQW), just an AutoX and hopefully
eventually track car. And of course just a great car to drive when I feel
like having a little more fun than a 4000lb wagon will afford you. This
transmission is hilarious! I don't have to shift down to pass people. I
passed like 12 cars on the way home just because I could feel all that
pent-up power just waiting to be released up there at 3000-3500rpm at like
freaking 50mph (laugh). Definitely NOT a cruising transmission. If I'd had
more time, I would have taken the fifth gear out of the FN and thrown it
in the 2H, but I was in a hurry... do you actually need special tools for
that, or is the Bentley just assuming you're not creative? (grin)
Later!
