If, for some stupid reason the course is SO tight your almost stopped to
get thru a corner, there is no reason to downshift. In autox, you really
shouldnt ever downshift into first except for when your launching off the
line. The time wasted in the downshift and again in the upshift proccess
is better spent lugging 2nd gear. Even in its worn stock form, the motor
has enough power at that low speed to make the time better spend in 2nd
gear.
