Alex,
Sounds like your describing a bad warmup regulator. If yours is still hooked
up electrically, try taking the electrical connection off before a cold
start. It should start the same. Now if it will idle for a while longer, I
would suspect that's your culprit. As the engine warms up your idle will go
to crap again, but not as fast as if you had the electrical heater hooked up.
You can also try starting it with the electrical connector off and when it
goes past the point when it typically dies, hook up the connector and see if
it dies in a short period of time. If it does, bingo, it's the warmup
regulator.
