Not true. Just get a downpipe with the OXS fitting
from TT.

Actually, diesel exhausts run cooler, so the Ex
manifolds have an easier life. I had one on my 1980S.

The 1.7 will also respond favorably to a G grind cam.
A good exhaust and an 80mm airflow will help too.
I would not do any more than this to a 1.7
