Based on some feedback from people whom have rebuilt these before,
the guides don't wear out too often.

Sounds ok to me. But I'm not a doctor, I just play one on this mailing
list.

Go to minimum deck height, and if want a little compression, go 15-20thou
under. An interference engine is still an interference engine...planing
down the head isn't going to make it any better, just a bit more likely
you'll bend something if the belt breaks.
